PRODUCT REVIEW & GIVEAWAY: Brawny Cat Sleeky Lounge XL

After careful consideration, from time to time I write product reviews. If you see it here, it's because, at LEAST I think it's worth you knowing about even if I have an issue with it and, at BEST, I think it's amazing and we should all have one, two or more of whatever it is I'm reviewing. I get NO reimbursement for writing these reviews, though to write a review I am supplied with the item, as I was in this case. This review is MY OPINION, ONLY. The result you experience using this product may differ.

I admit that I'm a sucker for cat furniture. I take great joy in seeing my cat relaxed on a cat bed or belly up on the top of a cat tree. In my book, you can never have enough comfortable places for your cat to sleep. If you add to that furniture that is made to be ripped into, yet is good looking and well built and you have my full attention.

One of three color choices of the Brawny Cat Sleeky Lounge XL.

Brawny Cat has a gorgeous product line of handcrafted cat scratch loungers they call their Scratch'n Slumber® Comfort Lounge. The Largest of them is the "Big Baby" Comfort Lounge. You may have seen this one featured on Animal Planet's "My Cat From Hell”, hosted by Jackson Galaxy.

I saw my first Comfort Lounge last year at BlogPaws in Salt Lake City. The model I saw is called the Big Sleeky Comfort Lounge. I was taken aback by the sheer SIZE of the piece and impressed with the gentle bolstered sides and handcrafted wood frame. I admit to lusting after the Lounge because most of my cats are over 10 pounds and physically big. As fate would have it, I WON the Lounge at the show and couldn't wait to get it home.

The price point of $179.00 was more than my budget could handle even though it is worth the cost. In my heart I knew I would load up on these loungers if only the price was more friendly to my multi-cat home.

Brawny Cat must have been reading my mind because they've recently introduced a new lounger to their line-up of must have loungers—The Sleeky Lounge XL.

DOOD Scratching ALT R Olson.jpg

The Sleeky Lounge XL is at a much lower price than it's cousins, but it doesn't sacrifice quality to save on costs. The XL's main difference is that it does not have the hand-crafted cedar frame. Instead, the unit is made entirely of laminated corrugated cardboard.

DOOD Posing R Olson.jpg
©2013 Robin A.F. Olson. the DOOD is a HUGE cat and he still has ample room to relax.

When I first lifted the XL out of the box I noticed how HEAVY it was. This is not a cheap scratcher trying to be a piece of furniture. This is furniture that can also be a scratching surface. The XL is not only much longer, at 26", than almost every other cat scratch lounge, it is extremely WIDE! - and at 16" from the front to the back of the XL, it goes way beyond the industry standards of 9 to 10.5".

Blitz and DOOD alt R Olson.jpg

I was very impressed. It was clear that the intention was to take the best of the more expensive loungers and rework it into a piece that was affordable, especially for multi-cat homes, and I think they did a great job.

The front and back sides of each lounger have a patina style graphic that comes in in one of three colors: Sleeky Lounge XL in Blue Patina, Sleeky Lounge XL in Lavender Blend and Sleeky Lounge XL in Royal Red. I think the colors will blend with most decor even if the cats don't care what is the color of their lounger.

Blitzen on the SleekyXL ROlson.jpg

My cats immediately scratched, stretched, laid upside down on the XL. They didn't need the catnip that comes with the lounger to be enticed to use it, but the catnip is VERY GOOD quality. It was fun to watch them rip into the lounger, then clearly enjoy themselves since they had PLENTY of room to roll around. Even my HUGE cat, the DOOD, fit comfortably.

Nicky and Bloopie R Olson.jpg

After a week, my cats are still enjoying the XL. I would say the only not-so-glowing comment I can make is I need MORE Sleeky Lounge XLs! My cats are constantly knocking each other off the XL so they can have a "turn." With the retail price of $59.95 I could definitely add to the one I have…

…but starting today, Brawny Cat invites us to get rid of our old, inadequate scratcher/loungers and upgrade to the New Sleeky Lounge XL.
Check out Brawny Cat's "Out with the Old - In with the New" Spring Sale!
You can get your kitties their very own Sleeky Lounge XL for just $47.95.

Blitzen Scratchin R Olson.jpg

In conclusion, I find the Brawny Cat Sleekly Lounge XL to be very well built, with smooth, flowing bolsters that all my cats seem very comfortable using. They would probably give this a big paws up based on the way they fight over the XL. The built-in Comfy Back support is a smart addition and adds to my cat's comfort. I am very impressed with the density of the corrugated cardboard. It's tightly compressed and seems to be very long-lasting. If I wanted to encourage my cats to NOT rip up the furniture or the carpeting, I would make sure each cat had their own XL and I'd put it by a sunny window.

Pop over to Brawny Cat's web site to see more information about the Sleeky Lounge XL and to place your order soon. I don't know how long this offer will last!

NOTE: The only tough part about purchasing the XL is to figure out which color you want!

My kitty kats would love this Sleeky Lounge XL.  The regular scratchers are okay, but mine like to hang out after they have sharpened their claws, and this looks like it would be very comfortable.  It also looks very sturdy.  I have a smaller cat who is older, a medium size cat who is my youngest, and a hefty hideaway (plus size) cat and Lounger looks like it would stand up to all of them.

My favorite places to sleep are on clean, dark laundry (the cat hair shows up better); on mama's shoulder when she's sleeping on her side; on top of her head at night; on any chair that a human person wants to sit in; and anywhere that will annoy my older, picky, cranky butt cat brother.

My favorite scratching places are the end of the sofa, any nice living room chair, the doorjambs, the fabric on our dining room chairs, the rug on the stairs, and the front door mat.  We have a scratching post but it is too pedestrian for my liking.

I am a blind, one-eyed Turkish Van/Angora, and I really would like to have a Sleeky Lounge.

I *might* even share it with ol' dopey Cat Buddy.

Love,

Felisha ;-3

Our New Kitty Girl Sophie is a rescue puss and at roughly 7 months old she is now going through her 'I want to scratch everything inappropriate in the house' phase.  We find her wearing down her petite little claws on everyting from the sofa to the doormats to the big upholstered fabric panels in our living room--she loves to climb those too and is often found hanging precariously from the top of them with a panicked 'uh-oh, how do I get down?' expression on her furry little face.  We have two scratching posts for her which she occasionally uses, but it's just so much more pleasurable to destroy furniture, don't you think?!  This lounger would be perfect for her--she could stretch out and have a good rough scratching session, then flip over and be all cute and sleepy.  We could really use this in our house, thank you for the chance to win it!

My kitties are desperate for a good lounger! We have a couple of cheap scratchies, one of which sorta kinda looks a little bit like a lounger. But really, it's so short even my petite Star can't lay down on it, much less stretch out! Leo is a huge kitty, he needs some room! Oh boy would they go bananas if they won such an awesome lounger! Why, they might even forget themselves enough to stand up and high four each other! (Leo, with the extra toes, could high five, but Star, with only the factory authorized number of toes, could not return it!)

I know you'll choose the perfect kitties for the giveaway! Paws crossed that you might consider us!

I belong to a local rescue for cats. I volunteer at the centers, help keep up their data base for adoptions, and have at least 3 foster cats as well as my own at all times. My life revolves around cats.  Nearly all have claws, and they can kill a pet shop cardboard scratcher in no time. It's costing me a fortune to keep replacing the silly things, but they love them and go crazy whenever I bring a new one home. They are such good cats, no scratching where they aren't supposed to and I would love for them to have something new and exciting that they could really get some use out of and not demolish it in less than a week.  I always put the cat's needs first, and it makes me happy to see them enjoying a new scratcher. That's why I keep buying so many of these cheaply made, yet expensively stupid ones.  Rescue isn't always easy, but they bring me so much joy especially when I can take a tough case and help the cat become more socialized and adoptable. And a big part of that is teaching them to play with toys, climb cat trees, and use scratchers so they will have good house manners in their new homes. And my own cats are the worst for destroying cardboard scratchers. When a 17 lb cat wants to kill something, it doesn't take long! So we are always looking for the next great cat scratcher. Right now, they are using a Play Cavern Scratcher and the more expensive brand called the Scratch Lounge. Both are on their last legs, so to speak, and I have had to use packing take to put the Cavern Scratcher back together because the largest cat in the house wants to sleep on it and it is of those sloping models. Sigh. Please help an exasperated cat mom!

My 2 HUGE boys at 17 lbs each can go through scratchers like termites through a Florida house!  We need either a new house or new scratchers!

I have a new kitten that would love to come home to this beautiful piece of training I mean furniture! My husband says kittens can cause lots of damage but with this lounger, we could be trouble free from the start....cant wait to see a kitten grow into a valuable piece of cat furniture. The lounger cost is much cheaper than replacing people furniture, right!!

This is a must have for my home!!  And it looks great too- awesome job sleeky loungers!!  We will have two beautiful additions to our home.

Charlie is the best companion ever! I am disabled and live on a very small Island in Lake Michigan. I don't know what I would do without him to entertain me
every day. These look fantastic and he so deserves one!

My Charlie so deserves an awesome bed like this. I am disabled and live on a very small, rural Island in Lake Michigan. He is my entertainment and the best companion I could ever want. I don't know what I would do without him.

I just rescued another cat. My kitties would love this

My cat Squid is a bit of a... jerk. (I usually call her something less polite.) If she doesn't get what she wants she will proceed to wreck havoc throughout my house. She knocks floor lamps over for the hell of it. She chews important papers because she can. If her food bowl is not filled to a level that she approves of, she will knock it over. Any mess in the house and I immediately scream, "Squid!!!" Lately, her thing is to scratch at my bed covers when I'm trying to sleep. I can't shut her out of my room because she will throw herself at my bedroom door all night. I think what she is trying to convey to me is the fact that she needs a Brawnycat XL Lounger. I think one of these would make her very happy, and save my home from further destruction. Thanks!

I raise foster kittens for the local shelter.  I guess it goes without saying that every year I seem to end up with at least one foster failure and the permanent cat population here has increased significantly.  Even with cat trees, window shelves and beds all over the house, the permanent cats are alway looking for something new to lounge on, scratch on and generally enjoy.  This brawny bed would be very well used in my house.

I would adore this scratcher for my huge boy Indy. He is longer than a door is wide when he lays down and I think he would just enjoy this a great deal.

we live on a low income and would not be able to purchase this scratcher for him and his sister Hannah.

please choose us.

Indy's mommy

While any one (or all) of my three rescues would LOVE this, I'm sure my big old guy, Jones, would use it the most.

Right now he uses the bed or couch for his lounging comfort and scratches on a post but he'd love to have a place of his own!

my five guys "take turns" on this! I suspect I'd be the most amused in the house -- but they would love it as well. And all five are over 10 pounds! :)

I'm currently owned by 3 cats myself, Kizzy (13), Kaize (5) & newly addition in October 2012 - Sheena (4). I've had cats just about all mylife, and being a pet sitter (http://www.shannonspetsitting.net) I'm around cats on a consistent basis. To me cats are 2nd nature! But I need this XL for a person thats new to cats & I'd like to do something nice for to say "Thank You & I apprecaite your friendship!!"

My pet sitting client & friend Laura is owned by 2 dogs. A pitbull & white German Shepard/pitbull mix.  Laura had the itch for about the last 6 months to adopt a 3rd pet. With all the pressure & postings I put of cats on my facebook page she slowing grew to love cats! In February I was a vendor at the Lincoln State Cat Club annual show. So I invited everybody I knew out to it. That morning I had a pet sitting emergency & had to take a dog to the vet. My Marketing Manager was running the booth for me. I text her to see how the show was gogin & she text me back Laura had stopped by. :-)  Next thing I know my manager it texting me that Laura adopted a kitten!! My jaw hit the floor!!! I was estatic becuase #1 the kitten came from my friends cat rescue, and #2 Laura she had taken the cat plunge! She named her "Macy Brown"

Macy was her name through the rescue and she was avery unique kitten. Because #1 she is brown & white! Hence the "brown" in her name. But she is also a tripod! She had to have one of her legs aputated after it was severly broken.

So now I have this friend who is thirsty for knowledge & has no idea what to do with a cat! LOL Needless to say Macy is holding her own no problem & rules the roost! Her & the dogs get along fine, cuz Macy established quickly that she is the boss! LOL  But other than a few toys I've given her & the fancy collars Laura has bought her, Macy lives in a dogs environment! Laura asked me to send her info & links for cat furniture etc. But I know she can't afford them. One of her dogs has severe IBD, so between her own bills, the vet bills, and pet food for 3 mouths to feed things are tight right now.

It would be really neat to get the XL and be able to give it to my friend for her new furry baby Macy Brown! She is always having me over for dinner & leaving me rave reviews etc. I'd like to do something back for her in return. :-)

My two seal mitted links boys are so needing this lounger. They would be just gorgeous laying there on their special cat furniture. They already know how loved and special they are, but his would be the cats meow!

hi i live in south carolina and the hot weather will be here soon. up til now and for the past14 years my cats sleep on my back or chest, along my leg, between my legs and they love to play eat mom's toes in the middle of the night.  so i am really warm and toasty most of the night and if i put one or more of them on the floor or cat tree, they pull the covers off the bed and i freeze- if they would love the lounger, i would buy one for each of them and maybe i could sleep all night- under the covers- without a cat attack on my toes.or other boky parts.  what really  gets me- they will not sleep on anyone else- they love their momma and  i love them back.  even the catnip crack kitty-he runs the nascar track that evidently runs through the house....or the old man who pukes after eating too fast-he has indoctinated all the places in here.  or the kitten who keeps us all young- please save me from my rem sleep stealers!!!!

my first entry disappeared- i have 4 cats and they sleep on or around me all the time- they like to attack my feet and pull the covers off my bed.....with a lounger (ot 2  - i will buy extra if they like it) at least i may be able to get a full nights sleep - if i put them out of the room- they cry like banshees and wake up everybody.  i do so adore my babies, especially since it does not look like grandkids are going to be around very soon, but sleep is nice when i have to work and end up drinking energy drinks because of lack of sleep with my bed hogs...and as for scratching- i don't believe there is any place sacred and safe from it....thanks.

Niko suddenly appeared one night,
soaked with rain and filled with fright.

All black like Fluffy who we adore,
and who passed away only months before.

Welcomed him in with a meal and love,
now know our meeting was planned from above.

Soothed and stroked his pretty black fur,
"we'll find his family, of this I'm sure."

Countless flyers and phone calls made,
he must be close to home and has only strayed.

Growing in our hearts with each passing day,
but no match was found or brought our way.

Such a sweet boy with so much heart,
now he is ours and we will never be apart.

Tearing through the house like the storm in which he came,
life to him is a never-ending game.

Those claws of his are the worst culprit yet,
though they are used for play and never a threat.

Although of this the couch and carpets would sure disagree,
as he uses them as a scratching post with quite the glee.

Regular cardboard scratchers don't stand a chance,
and they sure do put a dent in one's finance.

A quality, stylish scratcher would work just swell,
Niko says the answer is the Brawny Cat Sleeky Lounge XL!

Hi! We just love all the photos of you on this Lounger! We are a family of 3 kitties.. My Brothers sleep together on our kitty tower but.. I'm left out all the time and usually  end up sleeping  on the kitchen chair! My Mamma thinks that it I had one of these lovely and sturdy Loungers I could go back to being a very happy girl as I would have a special place to lay my head at the end of a long day's worth of playing. Now I'm a good girl kitty and promise I would share just a bit with my Brother so ya don't have to worry bout that!

Thankyou for letting us enter to win this wonderful Lounger!  (=^.^=)

Signed, Mamma, SweetPea, Toby and PJ

I think my post before didnt save!

but thats ok, I like writing about my cat!

My name is elizabeth and I am the proudowner of Hank, a orange 2yr old taby!

He has been such a light of awesomeness that came into my life! He is also a great big brother to his little human brother!

Hank is number 1 and everyone who is number 1 needs one of these!

Please let Hank be the winner!

Thank you!

oh, and good luck y'all!

My cat is annoying.. I try so hard to please him but he doesn't enjoy anything!! He won't eat cat treats, wet cat food, lunch meat, or any human food for that matter! I'm not used to a cat like this. He seems kind of bored because he just lays on my bed all day, so out of guilt I bought him a luxury 80in cat condo! He seemed interested at first so I was SO excited that I could finally provide him with some forms of comfort and entertainment. Unfortunately he NEVER goes on it (until cat nip is there) so I pretty much wasted my money on a huge thing that takes up half of my room! When I saw this, I immediately thought of him. It's something small and simple that I'm sure he'd love! I just can't afford to spend anymore money on him haha! Pick me so party cat Pete can finally have something he might enjoy :)

My first two rescue kitties were previously declawed so I have a kitty tree that was homemade that they run their paws on and that works fine for them. Now I have little Pollux though who has, and is keeping, all her claws! She needs something of her own to really scratch on! Please help a little kitty out. I unfortunately can't afford anything for a little while since I just got her spayed and back to health! Thank you for this oppurtunity! Richelle

With five felines here, claws are always being sharpened, exercised! We have one that has the Sisal rope unraveled again, my husband and son have repaired two of them a few months ago, by buying the rope, but, they didn't last long!

The purrbabies love to stretch out on any lap that is open and warm. One of ours made my husband's new computer lap desk his own because of the bean bag type material, LOL..

We love this unique design, its something we've never seen or used before! Our five felines would definitely enjoy checking it out! It looks like a great design for the way a cat's body is designed, sleek, curvy and elegant...

I foster so scratching posts never last long around here.

I foster primarily special needs kitties but their missing parts don’t keep them from wanting to be king/queen of the castle or from using their scratching posts.

Kitten season has already started here – hard. I have my first litter of the year with a mom.  The vet believes mom was hit by a car which dislocated her hip but that hasn’t stopped her from being a wonderful mother who deserves to be treated like a queen.

Andybelle, one of my FIV+ boys, is a horizontal scratcher and is also a size XL. Maybe that's XXL! Like people, cats can also get "muffin top", and Andybelle is ashamed of the way his "cup runneth over" when he tries to stretch out on our current scratcher.  It's bad enough that a big boy cat is named "Andybelle". Don't think he doesn't hear the snickers when we're at the Vet, which is often. I think that this gorgeous scratcher would give Andybelle the boost of confidence that he so desperately needs!

My "girls" sleep on anything that doesn't move and somethings that do!  Especailly the bed and clean laudry!

I just moved into a new home along with two of my ex-roommie's foster flunkies. For over a year and a half Samantha & Darrin (Bewitched fans, anyone?) spent all of their time in a medium sized cat cage in a shelter before my ex-rommie started to foster them. They had little free time and were timid around others (both human & other species). Samantha is a tuxedo and only wants to sit on your lap & purr the day away. Darrin is a calico with a nick name of 'grouchy old man' and loves to strut his stuff around the house. They are older cats and knowing their chance of adoption was slim to nil my ex-roomie formally adopted them after fostering for over a year. The shelter has since closed due to management/board issues.

Last fall my roommate annouced that she was selling her property and I needed to move out. She also said that if I wasn't interested in taking Samatha & Darrin that they would go back to a shelter. Of course I wanted them! Especially Darrin, since the two of us have gotten attached, he loves to head butt me & rub his face in my long hair. So it's now March, I've moved into a new place and all of us are slowly settling in. I don't own much and the basement flooded just this week and I lost some of my belongings. The cats have taken to sharpening their claws on my box frame in the middle of the night. They are much happier being with me and I've even seen more personality come out of them the last few weeks than I have seen in ages.

I would be grateful to win, but I know Samantha & Darrin would be even happier. Thanks~

You have no idea how much I need this for my 2 bed hogs--Oscar and Emmy. I recently bought them a inclined cardboard scratcher with they have pretty much alread demolished. The minute I took it out of the box they both attacked it and right now they fight over the tattered remains of it. Oscar, being a big bully, will sleep on it so that his sister cannot scratch on it. He does not look at all comfortable but he refuses to give in and let Emmy have any piece of it. Maybe this lounger would be big enough so that they can share. Also, currently the two of them are sleeping in my bed while I sleep on the couch. We usually all start out in the bed but by mid-night, they have convinced me that they need more room and I get delegated to the living room. Maybe with this lounger, there would be an extra sleeping surface for one of us---hopefully not me as that would not be a pretty picture at all!!!

So anyway, please consider Oscar and Emmy for winnners of your amazing giveaway. They would have something wonderful to exercise on and I might finally get a good nights sleep.

Thank you----Gail--Oscar and Emmy

I really need one of these! My brother, Lucky, is always scratching our only post and he doesn't like to share. Sometimes I sneak a scratch but then he chases me away and we have long kitty battles over it. I think we could really get along but it hurts my feelings when he won't let me sharpen my claws (I think he's afraid I'll use my sharp claws in our battles, but I promise I won't!).

I know my human-mom would buy me my very own scratching post if she could, but she says we have to wait a while unless we want to turn off the heat for a month so we can pay for it (I said no because we live in Colorado, and I don't want us all to freeze our whiskers off). I'm out of options and getting desperate. Please help a kitty out!

Sincerely,
Licorice

P.S. I'll let you have one of my mouse toys if you pick me. You can even have my favorite one with the tiny hat.

Leonardo has an Ikea end table topped with a towel and a blanket with a block of scratcher cardboard underneath. Really, the whole set-up while functional is kind of sad abs aesthetically a bit of an eyesore. He would appreciate the Brawny Cat Sleeky Lounge XL because he could really stretch out on it.

We just got our sweet kitty, Mario, delivered to us by the Underground Railroad Kitty Rescue Kitty Network from North Carolina to Florida!  We hadn't seen him in over a year!  We are so thankful to this wonderful group of volunteers for bringing him home to us!  He had been sick, so his foster Mommy took very good care of him, until he could come back to his Furever Meowmy:-)

We are retired and on a limited income.  Mario would be so thrilled to have his own big lounger, since he weighs 14 lbs, but I'm sure he would share with his sisters, Angel and Kensey.  His 7th birthday is coming up on April 10th, so this would be a wonderful surprise for our precious baby!

Thanks again for giving cat lovers an opportunity to win the Brawny Cat Sleeky Lounger XL!

My adopted orange kitties George and Walter would love a Brawny Cat Sleeky Lounge!  I like the fact that the XL is BIG--even though they are not huge kitties (they are each about 12 or 13 lbs), I notice that most cat furniture seems to be made for kittens or small cats, not normal-sized cats.  I'm sure they would love lounging on this furniture!

My house is full of brothers and sisters, and sometimes we fight over things. Our moms get us new things every now and then, but nothing as great as this lounger! I can't wait to sink my claws into it, roll around on it, and make it mine. But you know Pumpkin or GaGa or some other brother or sister will have to do the same. Thank you for sharing with us. We promise to share, too!

The Brawny Cat Sleeky Lounge XL is a fun giveaway for owners with a household of cats! I like the solid, quality construction and beautiful design of this furniture. Since cats have a tendency to scratch surfaces, there is no need to worry about them ruining your sofa when you are using a good product.
