Foster Cat Journal: Covered in Cats

Monte gets some rest.jpg

Every day I wonder if Monte will finally be over this URI and every day I think he's getting better, then no, he's worse, then no, no real change. His appetite continues to be good. He goes through phases of wanting to play or rest, while the others just want to run around like maniacs.

Even after 10 days, none of the kittens are perfectly healthy. I think it will be another week before they're all in the clear. This is so frustrating! At least I'm down to just changing clothes and washing my hands and face, instead of showering every time I leave the room. I'm NOT going to say anything about MY CATS NOT GETTING SICK. I'm not saying anything about it. NO.

Im Tired of Being Sick.jpg

I must say these cats are SNUGGLE MONSTERS! If they're not stuffing their faces or flying across the room, then RUN up my chest and nuzzle my neck, purring loudly. Monte's snotty purr bubbles. He "makes muffins" with wild abandon on my neck, then gives me a little nip that sends shivers down my spine. Yikes! He seems to be happy, even if he's a snot bucket. Monday he goes back to the Vet. By then, he'll possibly be my sole foster. With any luck, he won't be alone for long.

four cats, one lap copy.jpg
Yes, at the bottom of this photo is ANOTHER cat-so all four are laying on me, plotting something.

I wonder what it would have been like to have ALL EIGHT of the kittens from this litter? I'm sure I'd be broke from trying to keep them fed and I'd probably have some sort of permanent heat rash from them laying on me. Perhaps I wouldn't be strong enough to get up once they jumped on my lap? Maybe they'd smother me, then eat my flesh?! Guess it's a good thing I'll never know. Glad four got adopted before the transport to CT!

OMG whats that over your head.jpg
Look at their sweet faces. I wonder what they're thinking? I hope they're not looking up a me to decide if I'm sleepy enough for them to attempt to smother me with their love!

Even with the health problems, you can see them growing from poor kittens dumped in box to strong, happy, loving adults. All from good care and lots of love. It is inspiring to see.

They're beautiful!!! My mom's cat is a snuggle-butt too. She sleeps on my mom's chest!

I so jealous! Some of mine snuggle, some don't but they'd never do it enmasse. All those adoring little faces.

I've been told that the kitty respiratory thing can be lifelong for some cats, it that true? I took some kitties to a rescuer years ago (Momma appeared in dead winter with kittens in my basement window well.. I kept Momma - I was living in my parent's house and they gave me a limit on how many I could keep).. Rescuer told me after a couple weeks that she was going to put down one of the kits because of respiratory infection. The kitty was ok other than a lot of sneezing, so I thought her reaction was extreme, but I'd already signed over the kits and lost control. The cat who walked into my life this summer is an adult who goes through bouts of sneezing. I find they correspond to my own bouts of hayfever. We haven't done the vet exam on him yet so I don't have vet input yet. I know he's welcome and loved sneezes or not. (No other cat is sneezing so I assume either it IS an allergy or their vaccinations have them covered?) ANYWAY.. I hope Monte stabilizes and find the home that loves him no matter what his status.

I am not sure if you mentioned already that the vet has ruled out feline herpes as the cause of the sneezing and mucus? I was suprised to learn that this permanent but manageable disease has been traveling fast through shelters latley. I inadvertently brought it home on my clothes after visiting some infected cats and now 2 of our 3 have it. Luckilly in the short term we found out from oour vet that it is manageable with either lysene treats or lysene powder put in their soft food for about a week. The symptoms were one runny eye and a lot of sneezing and runny noses. The disease is not curable but when they are stressed it comes out and needs lysene to cut down the time to get past the flare up.

If this isn't what they have, then I am sure you are doing everything else possible to help them get better. The entire litter is really cute.

It may be herpes virus, which is why they ARE getting L-Lysine in their food every day. Thanks for the reminder to mention it. It's annoying, but it is manageable. Tomorrow, Monte will go to his Vet for a re-check and I'll talk to her about that since he's still not 100%.

Glad you know how to work with it!!
