Urging PetAg to RECALL Tainted KMR

Care2's Petition Site feature a petition I urge you to sign. It asks PetAg, makers of KMR (kitten milk replacer) to RECALL tainted products off pet food store shelves.

The FDA cannot request a recall of Pet Food. I guess pets don't count! In lieu of FDA action, Care2 has stepped up, hoping to get PetAg's attention on this long-standing matter that has killed many infant animals.

You can read the petition and decide if you want it by visiting this link.

There is a recall that started today for Nature's Variety pet food - they are doing a voluntary recall because one consumer complaint led to testing that uncovered a batch that had salmonella - here is what it said on the FDA site

"Nature’s Variety became aware of a potential problem after receiving a consumer complaint. Subsequent testing indicated that the lot code related to the consumer complaint tested negative for Salmonella. However, additional subsequent testing found the "Best If Used By" date of 11/10/10 to be contaminated with Salmonella.

No pet or human illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this lot code."

So no illiness caused but they are recalling because it is the right thing to do.

PetAg has hurt/killed many animals but isn't doing anything, even though they know there is a problem (which sounds like it is much worse then I had originally read it was)?

I have even more info on PetAg. Apparently when contacted, the FDA said they said: “The information you have provided did not originate from FDA. We can not confirm or substantiate it as we were not the source.”

There is no info at FDA regarding PetAg's contaminated KMR. So what is going on? I know rescuers who have lost kittens due to the KMR and there are quotes going around that the CEO said there was contamination, but that to just throw it out (or the latest is to send it to them and they will send you a new canister).

I agree...if there is a problem, step up to the plate and do the right thing.

I am a kitten foster for a large non-profit rescue group in Rochester NY. We have rescued over 3000 kittens since May 2007. For over a year now we have seen tainted KMR. It is always yellow in color instead of cream colored and has an off sour/chemical smell. The kittens won't drink it but not knowing we have syringe fed them. I have returned cans to Petco and gotten new cans but often the next one is tainted also. It is unbelievable that a product that costs $45 and is intended to save sick kittens is out there as a tainted/contaminented product!!

Other pet foods have been recalled when animals have been killed.

We have personal experience of 3 kittens being killed by the tainted KMR. The public needs to be made aware so they can check the batch number of the tainted stuff. The manufacturer's blind indifference by not alerting the public makes me think they are heartless and only interested in money and not the welfare of these innocent lives we are tring to save.
