REVIEW & GIVEAWAY: Love Saves the Day

Summer's here; time to kick back, take a break and savor reading a good book. I'm always a fan of quirky summer romance where a crazy-haired, hard-working woman runs into (and sometimes over) the “wrong” guy (who, of course, is the “right guy” by book's end), but this summer I decided to try something different by reading Gwen Cooper's “Love Saves the Day.”

Love Saves…is Ms. Cooper's third novel following “Diary of a South Beach Party Girl” and her New York Times Bestselling book, “Homer’s Odyssey,” the once-in-a-lifetime story of an extraordinary cat and his human companion.

Love Saves the Day, is a different kind of love story, segregated into chapters, each told in the voice of one of three characters: Sarah, her daughter Laura and Prudence, a cat. Initially, I was reluctant to read a book that included something written in a cat's voice. I've long-ago tired of reading cutesy misspelled words supposedly penned by a cat and I feared this would only end up in a lot of eye-rolling on my part.

From the first page, I was delightfully surprised by the perky and precocious tone of the feline lead. There were no cutesy misspellings. In fact this cat-character was charming, clever and insightful—who, from having had a few conversations with Ms. Cooper reminds me, is not much different than our esteemed author, herself. The world through Prudence's eyes was one I've not imagined before. Ms. Cooper definitely has unique insight into what her cat is thinking and how the world looks from five inches off the ground.

I devoured the story, quickly getting hooked on Prudence's journey because, in part, it reminded me so much of my own. Prudence is a bridge between her cat-guardian Sarah and Sarah's daughter, Laura. The challenging relationship of mother and daughter, the awkward discussions, the misunderstandings, the assumptions that can keep two people who love each other apart. This story is poignant and tender and some times funny, too. Ms. Cooper has a keen sense of what makes relationships tick and why they can so easily take a turn for the worse, even with the best of intentions.

But perhaps, Ms. Cooper's true gift lies in weaving three voices so artfully together, that make us want to turn the page and find out what happens next. Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if Loves Saves the Day (which, by the way, was the name of a VERY cool shop in NYC I used to spend hours in back in the 1980's) was destined for the Big Screen.

This is a grand tale that had me giggling and in tears, too. It's the kind of book you can read again and discover something new and once you reach the last page, it leaves you wanting more. I hope we'll get to read about Prudence again one day, but for now it's good to know a cat can be entertaining and without being saccharine. Save the sweetness for the iced tea you'll enjoy as you read this fine work.

After careful consideration, from time to time I write product reviews. If you see it here, it's because, at LEAST I think it's worth you knowing about even if I have an issue with it and, at BEST, I think it's amazing and we should all have one, two or more of whatever it is I'm reviewing. I get NO reimbursement for writing these reviews, though to write a review I am supplied with the item, as I was in this case. This review is MY OPINION, ONLY. The result you experience using this product may differ.

I would love to win a copy of this book!  And will happily pass it along to another follower when I am done reading it!

I'd love to win, seeing as how the contest is now open to Canadians.  I could use some good summer readings.

We've been loving Squee TV, by the way.  My daughter asks me several times a day how they are doing.  She wants to adopt Minnie Mom Cat, but we're too far away and also have our full complement of cats at the moment.

I absolutely love Gwen and Homer! I am fans on facebook.  I have read and shared Homer's Odessy with all my cat loving friends.  It was a wonderful read and I am sure Love Saves The Day will be also.

I loved her story of Homer and their adventures. So excited to read this book and if I win it, all the better to read and share!

I'd love to win this book ~ not for myself, but to donate to the local cat shelter I do volunteer work for. Thank you for the chance to win ~ and thank you for all the lovely stories you share here!

This book sounds awesome! I'd love to win so enter me!! :)

Looking for light reading since I'll be spending a lot of time sitting around waiting for baby to make his grand entrance.

I would LOVE to win this book as I am an avid reader and mom to kitties, Henry Fitzgerald and Homer Odysseus...named after two of my favorite authors!

I fell in love with Homer's Odyssey but haven't read Love Saves the Day yet. I was looking forward to meeting Gwen Cooper on her stop in Phoenix, but I am unable to attend as I have to drive my boyfriend and his kids back to the reservation in northern Arizona instead. :-(

One of the best - maybe even the best - reviews I have read of a book I fell in love with "at first reading". Delightful, insightful, and very very true, this review echoes  my feelings about Gwen Cooper's book.  I laughed, I cried, and I found out why there are pieces of me missing...  If you have not read this book yet,  please do yourself a favor and start reading it ASAP,  you don't know what you are missing!

The author's visit to Good Mews No-kill cage-free shelter in Atlanta was a hugh success. Over 100 folks were lined up as her book signing started and A Capella Books ran out.

Love all books with cats !

I'd love to win a copy of Gwen's book ... I haven't been reading much this summer but this one seems right up my alley.

I love Gwen Cooper's books.   Highly recommend then to all my animal loving friends.   She is a wonderful writer and a generous soul.  Can't wait to see her on her book tour.

Not a fan of "romance novels," but of course, a huge fan of cats, so I can't not enter! ;)  Thank you for the chance to win!

Pick me Pick me!!!

I would love to read this book and get insight into the mind of a cat!

I'd love to read this book and get into the mind of the cat!

I have been reading Erin Hunter 's, The Warriors, now into my 7th or so book.  I am known as the cat lady among people who know me.  I have been involved with TNR of ferral kitties since 2009 and recently a beautiful black green eyed she cat I named Pywacket has adopted me.  We would love the opportunity to read a different book of the cat's  view.  I will read it to Pywacket and she will let me know what she thinks of it.

I love Prudence & would also love an autographed copy of LSTD!

I loved her first book and look forward to hearing about Homer and the other cats.  I would love to have an autographed copy of her book and I also wish that she could do some signings in our area but that is probably hoping for too much.
